Jim Moore. Memories of the 1950s

I was born in 1947 and lived in the little Cul de Sac off Calder Terrace.
I started at Wester Hailes Primary school in 1952. I remember well being at school in 1953, Coronation year and everyone attending school that day was given a china Coronation mug and a packet of “Merrols” a sort of hard coated, soft centred toffee sweet.

The names I remember from that time are, Eileen Cunningham, Elizabeth Crosbie, Elizabeth Hankin, Alan Dalgliesh, Frank Lethbridge, Helen Miller(her parents had the farm just across the bridge over the canal on Wester Hailes Road.
Names I remember are Lorna Fanning, Gerald Courtney, Ann Sked. All lived in the prefabs apart from Helen Miller. Other names I remember from Sighthill but not from school are Bobo Veitch, I remember he had a brother who had survived polio, scourge of that time, they lived across from the Co-op. Ian McCartney, lived at the bottom of the hill on Calder Drive, right on the corner just before you turned to the shops(Baby Linen shop etc), Jackie Sinclair, lived on Calder Drive as well.
Linda Wood lived in the first house on the right hand side of Calder Terrace opposite the Skeltons.
Another name that has stuck with me but not sure why is Aileen or Elaine Maish(not sure of the spelling) her prefab on Calder Terrace was opposite the field that surrounded the church.
Thanks to Jim Moore for sharing these memories.
