About this memory
This wooden shop sign, displayed in Museums & Galleries Edinburgh's Collections Centre, is from Alexander Ferguson's confectioner's shop. The text in red relief letters reads: "Alex Ferguson Ltd Confectioners' with the royal coat of arms at the centre to mark the royal appointment of the firm as suppliers of confectionery to royalty.
Alexander Ferguson founded his confectionary company in 1837 and it was based on Melbourne Place in the Old Town until 1959. It was most famous for the production of Edinburgh Rock with its distinctive crumbly texture in assorted pastel colours.
On the Lost Edinburgh Group Facebook page one person commented: 'I worked at Ferguson’s near the castle making Chocolates and Edinburgh Rock'
