About this memory
Situated in one corner of the classroom, these were lit by the janitor every morning in colder weather and were coal burning.
Sadly they rarely heated more than 3 feet of room, the rest staying cold.
Lucky the pupils whose desks were nearest the stove, although they were often roasted all day.
In 1957 the Clean Air Act meant they could only burn Coke.
Possibly a combination of falling numbers and the cost of replacing the stoves led to the closure of Wester Hailes and all pupils were transferred to Murrayburn in 1957.
