Studio photo of my Mum holding my Brother Billy.

1940

About this memory

1940 - William Clifton was the 6th child to be born in the family. William was born on the 30th October 1940. William was known to us all as Billy.

Billy had spinal meningitis as a baby, which left him blind and brain damaged. He never married and lived with our Mother until her death.

Mother worked for the famous William Mutrie's Theatrical Costumes Company (Bells Brae, Dean Village) as a tailoress.

The Theatrical Costumes Company provided theatrical costumes to theatre's all over the United Kingdom.

Fraser Neal (owner of Mutrie's) recognised that Mother was highly skilled, so he employed her as his personal seamstress. Mother worked at Mutrie;s 20 + years.

Mother made all her children's clothes, not only sewing, but knitting and crocheting. She made the sample dresses for the Dean School when school uniform's became mandatory and also did knitting for neighbour's.

She brought up 9 children. How she managed to cook, clean and walk along the waterside to the Public Washhouse in (Henderson Row, Stockbridge) and work Full Time 5 &1/2 days a week is utterly amazing.

Again the photo was taken in an Edinburgh Photographic Studio.
