About this memory
1934 - My mother had 9 Children. They all looked after me as I was the youngest in the Family.
Dorothy Grant was the 1st child to be born in the family. Dot was born on the 28th April 1928. Dot's middle name was "Grant" which was our mother's maiden name.
Barbara Elspeth was the 2nd child in the family to be born. Barbara was born on the 15 April 1930.
Our house at 2, West Mill Lane, was once a private residence called Waverley House. It had 2 good sized bedroom's, with a fire place in each room. For the girls room there was 1 double bed and 3 single beds. The boys had the other room. There was a large Kitchen, big living room with a double bed in a recess and a bathroom with a tub. Mr and Mrs Halliday lived below us with their daughter Nettie and son Bobby.
Mum was always up early, getting a fire going and making porridge in winter and toast and jam in summer, except on Sunday's when we had bacon, scrambled eggs (made in a soup pot) and rolls. Mum did all the cooking and rarely went out at night as she said that we were her kids and the older ones would eventually have their own home.
We would spend hours sitting round the fire during winter, deciding what we would get when she won the Saturday Football Pools, which she didn't even enter at that time.
Bread and milk were bought at the Dean Village "Burns" Shop which was just round the corner located on Dean Path. For the majority of groceries we went to the Co-op in (Raeburn Place) Stockbridge.
