Fire at my mum's workplace William Mutrie & Son

May 1957

About this memory

1957 - Miller Row, Dean Village.

My mum helped rescue some costumes when the facility went on fire. I believe she went to work there in 1951, when I was 4 1/2. She did all of the hand sewing.

My mum also worked for Mutrie's when they moved to Broughton Street in Edinburgh. I was in both places and remember mum showing me the costumes.

Fraser Neal (owner) also lived in the Dean Village as did his Cutter Johnnie Corbett, who lived in number 2 Well Court.

I Remember seeing the burned out building in the Newspaper.

My oldest sister danced for the Lex McLean Show, who I believe used Mutrie's costumes.
