The Five Men Of Faray c.1909

1909

About this memory

(L-R) - James Groat, Robert Reid, John Harcus, William Burgar, John Drever.

In December 1908 a Peterhead fishing vessel the SS Hope ran aground on the Holm of Faray, in Orkney, during a storm. The five men from Faray braved the storm in a rowing boat to rescue the crew. They each received a medal and other gifts from Edward VII on an invitation to Balmoral.

They were always referred to as the "Faray Heroes".
