Studio Portrait Salvation Army Girl 1930s

About this memory

Bella Reid.

"I've been in the Salvation Army all my life. My mother was a Salvationist when she was young. We were all brought up to go to the Army. There's no drink allowed in the Army - teetotallers.

"You signed your name when you joined and you got your 'Articles of War' with the Army flags on it. If you wanted to take it as your religion you signed it.

"I was collecting once for the Salvation Army in my uniform outside Jerome's the photographers in Leith Street. The women said, 'Come in and we'll take your photo for you.' They didn't charge me." - Bella Reid (born 1913)
