Esparto Grass Label, 15 October 1966

About this memory

Esparto Grass, arriving by ship from Africa, was offloaded at Granton West Pier onto wagons bound for the papermills at Penicuik. The label would be stuck to the side of the wagon.

Local children would keep on eye out for any tortoises that often appeared among the shipments to keep them as pets.

The ship, the SS Ypapanti, was shipwrecked off the coast of East Anglia a month after this shipment.
